Hola! And welcome to Lanier High School. I am Maribel Velez Ramos or Ms. Velez, and I am very excited to be your teacher this year. I come from Puerto Rico, a beautiful island in the Caribbean, territory of the United States. This is my 27th year in education. I have taught almost all high school-level social studies courses and have coordinated student groups focusing on environmental education and social justice since 1997. I am excited to meet and teach you this year. Have a great school year!

Texas ArcGIS Online Mapping Contest! Award Winner 2019
Analyzing Gentrification in East Austin was an AP Human Geography class project at Akins High School. The goal was to analyze the process of gentrification, the changes in the neighborhood landscape, and the social- economic impact of gentrification in East Austin Texas.
2019 National Geographic Teacher Advisory Council (TAC)
The National Geographic Society is launching the first Teacher Advisory Council (TAC) in June 2019 to help inspire, inform, and activate a community of teacher leaders to drive toward a planet in balance.

By providing civic and environmental education, the Citizens of the World Club teaches students how to be involved in civic actions. They develop leadership skills and civic consciousness through activities such as a campaign to build awareness of the stigma of poverty and a project to clean up a polluted beach.
