AP Human Geography

Course Description:
The Advanced Placement Program offers a course and exam in Human Geography to qualified students who wish to complete studies in high school equivalent to an introductory college course in Human Geography. The material for this course reflects the content of a typical introductory college course in Human Geography. The exam is representative of such a course and is considered appropriate for the measurement of skills and knowledge in the field of introductory Human Geography.
Curriculum :
The purpose of the AP Human Geography course is to introduce students to the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of the Earth’s surface. Students employ spatial concepts and landscape analysis to examine human social organization and its environmental consequences. Students also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their science and practice. The five major goals of this course are:
1. use and think about maps and spatial data.
2. understand and interpret the implications of associations among phenomena in places.
3. recognize and interpret at different scales the relationship among patterns and processes.
4. define regions and evaluate the regionalization process.
5. characterize and analyze changing interconnections among places.
This course is divided into 6 major units that will be covered prior to the AP Exam.
1. Cultural Patterns and Processes
2. Population
3. Political Organization of Space
4. Agricultural and Rural Land Use
5. Industrialization and Economic Development
6. Cities and Urban Land Use

Grading Policy:
40% Skills
60% Content
Late Work:
Late work will be accepted, but for everyday an assignment is late, points will be deducted.I will not accept late work after 5 class days.
Tests:
All tests will be constructed to look like the real AP test. This will include multiple choice and FRQs . Tests will be timed and evaluated similar to the AP Exams.

Are students allowed to use cell phones?
The person who discovers a student using one of these devices during class time will confiscate it or notify an administrator who will confiscate the phone. The phone will be returned to a parent after payment of a $15.00 fine. A second offense will require a 2 week waiting period and $15.00 fine.
Personal Electronics (including IPODs, MP3, CD players, & electronic games)
We recommend that students do not bring these items to school. IPODs, MP3, or CD players may NOT be used during class time. Breaking this rule will result in the equipment being taken up and stored until the end of the day. Loss or theft of these items is not the responsibility of the school.
Completely turn off your cell phone during class time. Do NOT have it out!
1st offence: I take the phone and give it back at the end of class
2nd offence: I take it and give to the AP. You lose $15.
**If you refuse to hand over your phone I write a referral. If the phone or your reaction is distracting I will call for an AP to take the phone and/or you out of the classroom.
